Short Term Memories

I stand under the bridge
That I thought would lead me to you
As I moved from one side to the other,
Smiling at the thought of you,
The ground shook and the bricks crumbled
My knees were scraped along with my hands
Too busy to wipe off the dirt,
Wiping the tears that fell as I did
How could I have known?
None of this was stable
It seemed so clear at the beginning
It was only a mirage
Underneath,
Only unkempt promises
Slipping through my fingers like the ribbons tied around them
A pretty package, but revealing nothing imperishable
Even the prettiest of ribbons fray
Even the strongest of bridges can crumble
Even the cleanest of hands can begrime
So here I stand,
At the foot of the razed bridge
Knees scraped and hands dirty
Eyes red and cheeks stained
Waiting for the rain,
To wash it all away
